The Ringo Starr Encyclopedia

by Bill Harry

Ringo Starr was the genuine working-class member of the Beatles. Born into poverty in a tiny house in Liverpool's Dingle area, deserted by his father, he suffered years of illness which seriously affected his schoolwork. Despite having all the odds against him, he became one of the most famous people on the planet.

With a kit bought for him by his stepfather, he taught himself to play the drums and soon became one of the most acclaimed drummers in Liverpool - just as the famed 'Mersey Sound' was being created - as a member of Rory Storm & the Hurricanes, a group billed above the Beatles. He made his first appearance with the Fab Four in Hamburg during a recording session. The rest is history.

Ringo became the most popular member of the group while in America during the 'British Invasion'. George Martin described him as 'the cement that held the Beatles together'.

His story is inspiring: from humble beginnings to mega-stardom; dating a succession of beautiful models and actresses ; marriage to Bond Girl Barbara Bach; and fabulous wealth and recognition as a recording star and actor in his own right.

The Ringo Starr Encyclopedia completes the Virgin series on the individual Beatles and in the most comprehensive book about Ringo Starr ever written.

Fun with the Fab Four

Label: GoodTimes Entertainment Limited

Here are rare and unusual news films, TV appearances, and interviews featuring the greatest group ever, including a Shakespearean comedy sketch, long thought lost, with Paul and John as Pyramus and Thisbe. This exciting compilation from the sensational Sixties also features outrageously funny press conferences, as well as clips of both their original drummer, Pete Best, and Ringo's temporary replacement, Jimmy Nicol. You'll see on-location footage of the Beatles shooting A Hard Day's Night at London's Paddington Station, and their characteristically off-the-wall reactions to being made Members of the Order of the British Empire. Follow the controversy surrounding John's remark that the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus" and the boycott that resulted, and hear about their run-in with the law for violating the curfew at a Minneapolis motel.

Paul McCartney: Paintings

by Paul McCartney

I don't think there is any great heroic act in going in slavishly every day and saying, "I must do this." So what I find is that I do it when I am inspired. And that's how I can combine it with music. Some days the inspiration is a musical one and other days it has just got to be painting.
--Paul McCartney, from the interview

For more than seventeen years Paul McCartney has been a committed painter, finding in his work on canvas both a respite from the world and another outlet for his drive to create. His painting, like much of his life, has been a very private endeavor. In April 1999 he exhibited the work for the first time in Siegen, Germany, where it met with critical acclaim, which led to his decision to share the work through the publication of this volume.

Full of life and intense color, these paintings reveal McCartney's tremendous positive spirit as well as a visual sophistication and bold handling influenced by his friendship with Willem de Kooning. He carves, scratches, and sculpts the paint, creating complex and layered works. Faces abound in the paintings, from the many lovely abstract portraits of Linda McCartney to irreverent, affectionate portraits of the Queen of England. Humor plays against more somber imagery -- masks and Celtic motifs -- while his landscapes radiate a sense of place.

Beautifully designed and produced, the portfolio of paintings is accompanied by candid photographs by Linda McCartney of her husband in the studio. A collection of texts by contemporary critics and curators place the paintings within context, while a long and insightful interview allows McCartney's own voice to be heard. Frequent points of crossover between his music and visual explorations will intrigue those interested in the artistic process. Rarely is one able to find an artist working with such confidence and skill in such diverse media. All followers of McCartney's will be delighted to see these exuberant works unveiled and to experience this unexpected and accomplished expression of his creativity.

Paul McCartney was born in 1942 in Liverpool, where he attended the Liverpool Institute. McCartney has drawn since his youth but made the decision to begin painting when he turned forty. As a musician he has created a monumental legacy through his involvement with the Beatles, with Wings, and in solo and collaborative rock releases, worldwide tours, and benefit concerts that continue today. In the mid-1990s he expanded his efforts into composing and performing classical music, including solo piano pieces and a symphony performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. He was knighted in 1996.

November 1-2, 1965 - The Music of Lennon & McCartney

Taped: Monday 1 & Tuesday 2 November 1965

The Beatles drove to Manchester to record The Music Of Lennon And McCartney, a special for Granada Television. Paul began 'Yesterday' and after 22 seconds the cameras cut away to a pregnant Marianne Faithfull performing her version. The group mimed to 'We Can Work It Out' and 'Day Tripper'. Other artists performed their own versions of Beatles songs.
