The Beatles - The Decca Audition (2024 Stereo Remix)

The Beatles' pivotal audition for Decca Records on January 1, 1962, marked a significant moment in music history, despite the outcome initially being a rejection. A&R representative Mike Smith, inspired by their performance at the Cavern, arranged the audition. The group, comprising John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Pete Best, traveled from Liverpool to London for the session.

The audition, scheduled for 11 am, faced delays as Smith arrived late and insisted on using Decca's amplifiers rather than The Beatles' own equipment. The group recorded 15 songs in roughly an hour, including three Lennon-McCartney originals. Although nerves affected their performance, they were confident it would lead to a contract.

However, Decca opted for Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead, citing guitar groups as passé. This decision, attributed to Dick Rowe, later known as "the man who turned down The Beatles," became infamous. Epstein's persistence led to further negotiations with Decca, including a promise to buy 3,000 copies of any Beatles single released, but to no avail.

Despite the rejection, the audition tapes proved fortuitous. They provided Epstein with high-quality recordings to shop around other labels, eventually leading to an audition at Abbey Road with George Martin at Parlophone. This pivotal encounter ultimately propelled The Beatles to global stardom.

Here We Go was normally broadcast on Fridays, but for some reason this show was broadcast on a Tuesday. This was the Beatles' fifth and final appearance on the show, but host Ray Peters incorrectly refers to it as their fourth. Brian Epstein later cancelled three appearances scheduled for June and July. The series was originally titled Teenagers' Turn: Here We Go and was the show on which the Beatles made their radio debut in March 1962.

The Beatles also recorded I Saw Her Standing There for this particular show, but it was edited from the final broadcast. This was the first time that the public got to hear Do You Want To Know A Secret and Misery as the Beatles' debut LP wouldn't be released until 22 March - on the same day that Kenny Lynch released Misery. His was the first cover version, while Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas' version of Do You Want To Know A Secret would be released in April.

This show was recorded three days before the beginning of their U.K. tour, opening for Tommy Roe and Chris Montez. The single version of Please Please Me had just topped the New Musical Express chart, hence the reference in Ray Peters' introduction, although this wasn't the chart which the BBC normally used.

Here We Go's House band was the Northern Dance Orchestra, aka the NDO, one of several bands employed by the BBC to fulfil a long-held agreement with the Musicians Union. Bands like the NDO, the Midlands Dance Orchestra, etc., were Musicians Union members and had to be employed to fulfil the BBC commitment to "live" music; it was because of this agreement that bands like the Beatles were booked to play live. A certain amount of "live" music time had to be alloted to counter the the-growing amount of time given over to the playing of records, no called "needle time" in radio parlance. Hence, some shows like Here We Go, Pop Go The Beatles and others were entirely live with no records played, while Saturday Club and Top Gear were a mixture of records and pre-recorded live sessions. Radio Luxembourg and the pirate stations (which appeared in 1964) had no such agreement with the Musicians Union and just played records.

The Trad Lads may have been another Musicians Union member band, specially formed for the purposes of radio work on the BBC. However, a group called the Trad Grads recorded for Decca in 1963. Ben Richmond recorded two songs for Pye's Piccadilly label in 1963. Warmed Over Kisses was not one of them.

About the survival of this particular tape

This show survives only because one of the evening's performers taped it directly off of FM radio onto a domestic tape recorded (which explains the superb sound quality). The 13'46" worth of Here We Go featuring the Beatles' three songs was buried in the middle of nearly three hours' worth of recordings of children playing, a few other minor off-air recordings and the like. The original tape - believed to be in the possession of the original recordist - is complete as reproduced here, but it is shedding oxide and is poorly spooled. Additionally, it was recorded as four mono tracks to get the maximum recording time, so it is impossible to play back on most conventional domestic open-reel decks.

The tape was salvaged by a recording expert in the UK, who transferred it onto analogue cassette while performing some minor tweaking. All that was done after this transfer was to feed the recording through No-Noise and Sonic Solutions to eliminate the prominent hiss, while a touch of boost was added to the drums. Unlike most Beatles' BBC sessions, this recording comes directly off an original open-reel copy, via single generation of professionally recorded cassette without Dolby noise reduction. As such, you are hearing a fourth-generation-from-source recording (two analogic and two digital generations), which is closer to source than most commercial recordings. Any minor drop-outs are due to the age of the original open-reel tape; however, whenever possible these were edited.

This recording came to light just after the release of Great Dane's 9CD box set, in the Spring of 1994, and was donated to Great Dane to help complete the saga of the Beatles at the BBC.

THE ROAD TO FAME 1961-1962

On the Beatles first trip to Hamburg in 1960, as John, Paul, George, Pete Best and Stuart Sutcliffe, they jammed with Tony Sheridan at the Top Ten. The following year they found themselves backing him professionally, although Sutcliffe attended the sessions he did not actually participate. Whilst working with Sheridan at the Top Ten they were seen by Bert Kaempfert, Polydor's producer. Immediately aware of their potential he subsequently signed them for a one year contract for the princely fee of around 300 DMarks each and on 22/23 June 1961 they recorded their songs in an infant's school hall (the Friedrich Ebert Halle) in Hamburg. The four Beatles and Tony Sheridan taped these songs together, "My Bonnie"; "When The Saints Go Marching In"; "Why"; "Nobody's Child"; "Take Some Out Insurance On Me Baby" and "Sweet Georgia Brown". But Kaempfert gave the Beatles the chance fo record two tracks on their own. "Ain't She Sweet" and "Cry For A Shadow", although it was "My Bonnie" and "The Saints" that were subsequently released in Germany in August 1961.

Whilst "Love Me Do" is generally considered to be the groups debut, in fact "My Bonnie" is chronologically months ahead. Arguably it is the most pivotal recording the group ever made. Different versions of "My Bonnie" have been released, over the years, but the two versions on this CD include the original intro's in both English and German by Tony Sheridan, omitted in later versions. In versions officially released of "Sweet Georgia Brown" new guitar and drum parts were added to the record in an attempt to make the original sound more like the Beatles of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" fame. The original version without overdubs is rarely heard but is included here. A similar fate occurred with "Take Out Some Insurance On Me Baby", with the added complication that Sheridan's vocal of the evil swear-word "goddamned" was removed. "Ain't She Sweet" underwent the same process before it was released in July 1964. The flipside of that single "Nobody's Child", although it wasn't overdubbed, they chopped it down from almost four minutes to three. Here on this CD you have all the tracks as they were originally recorded by the Beatles without, any of the overdubs or other alterations.

Epstein became the Band's manager in 1961 and did his best to persuade, cajole and generally twist the arm of Decca's A & R chief, Dick Rowe, to sign his boys. On I January 1962, some four days before the English release of "My Bonnie", the Beatles auditioned for Decca, their first for a major U.K. record label. As history records they were turned down. These auditions however are included in this CD for you to make your own judgments and for the first time reproduced at TRUE SPEED.

Review: Revolution take... your knickers off!

After years of a dwindling Beatles outtakes supply comes this release, featuring one of the most interesting takes to surface perhaps ever. The full 11-minute "Revolution 1" has the familiar recording we all know (minus additional orchestration) plus several minutes of jamming, which eventually went on to form the basis for "Revolution 9." The title of the bootleg comes from John's talk at the start; the engineer announces "Revolution take..." and John replies "Take your knickers off and let's go!" The recording apparently runs off-speed and some enterprising folks have gone through the trouble of speed correcting it (it now runs 10:46). Disc 1 continues with more outtakes from 1968, less exciting than "Revolution 1," but still nice to have. Their variations are described below. The remainder of the two discs are filled with Beatles-related session tapes. The "Step Inside Love" Cilla Black session features Paul McCartney on guitar and disc 2 has Badfinger sessions for "Come And Get It" and "No Escaping Your Love," with Paul on piano and vocals.
